At FTII, he studied Screen Acting and graduated in 2008, where he was a batchmate of actor Jaideep Ahlawat, with whom he later worked in Jaane Jaan .

Vijay Verma’s career is a story of persistence. After graduating from FTII in 2008, he moved to Mumbai to pursue acting professionally.

He initially worked in theatre and short films before making his feature-film debut with Chittagong in 2012 . Before that, he had worked odd jobs selling SIM cards for a mobile company in Hyderabad, working at a call centre, and in events management.

He once told his boss at a Nokia showroom, “One day, I’ll put my photo in your Nokia showroom. I’ll be the brand ambassador” .

His early years in Mumbai were filled with uncertainty. He was locked for a role in Anurag Kashyap’s Sacred Games, did his costume measurements, and was then dropped .

“Stuff like that has happened, but some part of me kept the faith and belief,” he later said . His 2013 film Monsoon Shootout was screened at Cannes, but after that, he sat idle with no work for many years .

The breakthrough came with his performance in Pink (2016), where he played Ankit Malhotra . But even after Pink, there was a lull until Gully Boy happened .

“The door suddenly started opening for me,” he said . His portrayal of Moeen Arif in Zoya Akhtar’s musical drama earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut .
